Military veterans and their spouses are a highly sought after talent pool for civilian organizations looking for talent that can bring them a definitive competitive advantage. Despite the number and range of programs and other efforts undertaken to enhance companies’ ability to effectively recruiting, hiring, and retain military-connected employees, many companies struggle to sustain effective efforts. Issues that most commonly persist include: cultural understanding, military-to-civilian skill and competency alignment, and managing differing communication and workforce planning approaches. I/O Psychologists are uniquely positioned in expertise and roles to enable companies to excel at finding and retaining military veterans and spouses. This presentation will summarize the research findings and best practices for maintaining successful military-connected talent pipelines and management. It will provide suggestions and recommendations that audience members can immediately apply to their own organizations.
The presenters are the editors of the book Military Veteran Employment: A Guide for the Data-Driven Leader and the founding leaders of SIOP’s Military and Veteran Initiative Committee.
