Research Scientist, Product R&D (SHL-58030)

SHL is seeking a researcher or data scientist with applied experience to join our interdisciplinary R&D team as a Research Scientist. The Research Scientist will work with other social scientists, data scientists, and product managers to develop and enhance our leader assessment and development solutions. The Research Scientist is a core contributor on the Product R&D team and will conduct research on critical talent management challenges by conducting literature reviews, analyzing existing data assets to yield new insights, and leading efforts to collect new data. 

Position Responsibilities

  • Conduct product-focused research on major talent management topics – including leadership, high potential, derailment, assessment trends, and candidate experiences – using existing data and secondary literature. This includes:
    • Developing conceptual frameworks and empirically test predicting talent management outcomes such as employee performance, retention, job fit, engagement, etc.
    • Designing and executing comprehensive data analysis plans.
    • Applying multiple analytic methods from statistics, psychometrics, and data science to test theoretical models and build predictive algorithms.
    • Researching and developing new assessment-focused talent management solutions.
    • Developing or testing measures of personality, cognition, behavior, and work context.
    • Writing and revising technical documents and white papers as required to summarize project findings and implications.
    • Presenting research findings to internal stakeholders, including product managers.
    • Serving as an internal subject matter expert and providing support to multiple projects and other team members on their projects.
  • Collaborating with other researchers and teams to enhance the relevance, innovation, and impact of our research and products.
  • Ensuring that all research is rigorous, conforms to the highest quality standards, and has a positive impact on organizations and their members.
  • Plan, design, and implement large-scale surveys and assessment tools to test new content and product concepts. This includes:
    • Scoping and specifying the details of data collection procedures, sampling methodology, and client promotional/recruiting materials.
    • Leading efforts to recruit client organizations and their employees to participate in surveys.
    • Helping clients identify survey population and any specific requirements, such as special sub-samples.
    • Writing, developing, and testing measures of various psychological, social and environmental constructs.
    • Developing survey instruments with complex branching patterns using online platforms, such as Verint.
    • Monitoring survey progress and performance, using response rate reports and survey tracking tools.
    • Creating documentation of the questionnaire development process, data collection methods, sampling designs, and decisions related to sample statistical weighting.
    • Preparing summaries and analyses of survey data, including tables, graphs, and technical reports that describe survey techniques and results.

Education, Experience and Qualifications

Advanced degree in an applied research-oriented discipline, with strong experience in quantitative research and methods.

  • Preferred: PhD or ABD in the Social Sciences (such as Industrial & Organizational Psychology, Social Psychology, Political Science, or Economics), Business, Applied Data Science, or Applied Statistics, with 1-3 years demonstrated experience conducting research in an applied organizational setting.
  • Considered: Masters in the Social Sciences (as above), with at least 3 years demonstrated experience conducting research in an applied setting.

Applied research experience should focus on issues related to talent management, business management, social, or policy-related issues. 

Demonstrated proficiency in:

  • Generating and testing hypotheses.
  • Designing and executing complex research studies.
  • Writing and designing questionnaires.
  • Administering complex questionnaires on survey platforms, such as Verint, Qualtrics, or SurveyMonkey.
  • Cleaning and managing large datasets using syntax and code (preferably in R)
  • Applying and interpreting statistical analyses including: linear and non-linear regression, correlation, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, item and reliability analysis.
  • Statistical and analytical software, such as R, SPSS, SAS or STATA (R is preferable).
  • Interpreting and communicating the practical utility and significance of results of analyses to business executives.
  • Written and oral communication skills and ability to  due to internal and external client interactions
  • Command of relevant psychological, social and macro theories of leadership, organizational behavior, individual differences, and organizational theory.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experience with talent- or employment-related data.
  • Extensive experience managing and analyzing data using R.
  • Command of relevant psychological, social and macro theories of leadership, organizational behavior, individual differences, and organizational theory.
  • Experience applying predictive modeling techniques such as decision trees, ridge regression, and gradient boosting.
  • Experience with interactive reporting tools such as MicroStrategy or Tableau.
