Presidential Address: Examining Consulting Requests From the Past Year - How To Expand the Impact of I-O

As an I-O, I am often in the position of explaining the value I bring to an organization and even demonstrating how I-O principles can be leveraged across a variety of organizational needs. And this can be a regular part of life for an I-O – whether you are in-house or an external consultant. Therefore, it is important to understand organizational needs and how to leverage the I-O skillset to demonstrate improvements. For this discussion, I plan to highlight two trends I have seen over the last year in organizational requests (albeit not new to I-O) that allow I-Os to demonstrate a broader application of our skillset: an increase in selection process (beyond a needs assessment) and compensation reviews. Together, we will review the context behind these reviews and the distinct value add that I-Os bring to the table.
