    The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology’s 9th annual Leading Edge Consortium, "Building Future Leaders: Innovations and Trends in Talent Management," is designed to provide key strategies and best practices that HR managers and business leaders can use in their own organizations. The event will take place October 18-19 at the Omni Richmond Hotel in Richmond, VA. Attendees will hear from a select list of experts who will relate the best talent management practices for identifying, developing, and retaining leaders.

    The FedPsych Forum

    The FedPsych Forum is an opportunity for Federal I/O Psychologists to have an open platform to share ideas, research, and experiences working for the federal government

    When: Thursday, April 25
    Where: Charles Sumner School, 17th and M St NW, Washington, DC
    Time: 2:00pm – 4:00pm
    Networking Event: 5:00pm-7:00pm

    Presentations (2:00pm – 3:00pm)

    The first half of the Forum Session will consist of three presentations on MSPB research:

    • Engagement Scale: Doug Nierle will discuss development of MSPB’s Engagement Scale.  This work is also described in the MSPB report The Power of Federal Employee Engagement.
    • Fair and Equitable Treatment: Cynthia Ferentinos will discuss the MSPB report Fair & Equitable Treatment: Progress Made and Challenges Remaining: MSPB Report on Fair Treatment of Minorities and its connection to recent research on fairness.
    • Workforce Motivation: Peter Leeds will discuss methods MSPB has used to study Federal employee motivation, as discussed in the report Federal Employee Engagement: The Motivating Potential of Job Characteristics and Rewards.

    If you cannot attend in person and would like to call in, you can do so for this portion of the forum. Please indicate your desire to call in by COB Tuesday, April 23rd by emailing FedPsychForum@opm.gov. Note there will be no option to call in to the Breakout Sessions.

    Breakout Sessions (3:15pm – 4:00pm)

    The second half of the Forum Session participants will breakout into discussion sessions. Forum participants will vote on the topics of interest and then breakout into groups. Group facilitators will ask questions and involve participants in the conversation.

    Offsite Networking Event (5:00pm – 7:00pm)

    After the session we will walk over to a local establishment for a Networking Event to continue the conversation in a more relaxed environment

    Educational Testing Service (ETS) is seeking volunteers to participate in a 10-minute survey to broaden the organization’s understanding about the alignment between writing in K-12, college settings, and the workplace. 

    The survey examines the kinds of writing tasks that students use in K-12, community college, and 4-year college settings in the United States, as well as the breadth of writing tasks that are required across different workplace sectors. Responses from this survey will inform future research and development of educational resources that support the teaching and evaluation of writing with a special interest in college- and workplace-readiness. 

    Participants’ names will be entered into a drawing to win an iPad® Mini, a $100 gift certificate, or a $50 gift certificate. ETS is seeking participants who are: (a) currently employed; OR (b) college students who have completed an internship.  Please feel free to pass this along to colleagues, friends, and relatives.

    Interested in nominating someone for this year’s Bemis Award?  Please e-mail the name of the person you wish to nominate to Alexander Alonso at presidentelect.ptcmw@gmail.com. The deadline for submitting names for consideration is March 20, 2013.


    Individuals nominated for this award should be current or retired professionals who most nearly emulate the three primary qualities for which Steve Bemis is remembered:

    1. Accomplished personnel measurement practitioners who are recognized for their on-going commitment to the principles of merit and fairness;
    2. Professionals who have made an impact in the field by their practical contribution(s) that have either resulted in an improved or new procedure; and
    3. Concerned individuals who are recognized for their commitment to assisting fellow practitioners, being available to them, and freely calling on them.

    About the Award:

    The Stephen E. Bemis Memorial Award is a unique award granted each year by the International Personnel Assessment Council (IPAC) that is intended to reflect on both the tangible contributions that Steve Bemis provided to our profession AND on the open, caring attitude that characterized his personality. It was designed to serve as a perpetual reminder of the qualities that caused his colleagues to admire him.

    First, and foremost, Steve Bemis was a practitioner--a practitioner who was deeply committed to the principles of merit and fairness. His primary concerns centered around the need to develop tests that were truly job related and did not unfairly discriminate against any group.

    Steve's contributions were practical in nature. He improved upon job analysis techniques and published his results to assist his fellow practitioners. He recognized the extent to which evaluations of Training and Experience highlighted quantity as opposed to quality. Thus, he was one of the initial contributors to the Behavioral Consistency Method. He understood the impossibility of requiring employers to demonstrate empirical validity for all of their tests and joined the fight to elevate the status of content validity as a viable means for employers to validate tests. Steve also recognized the value of tests to management--and the need for management support. As such, he helped publicize the cost utility of employment testing.

    Among his many attributes, Steve is most remembered for the friendship he generously gave to his fellow practitioners. He encouraged junior analysts to acquire more knowledge, and he motivated those who had been in the field for many years to share their experiences. Practitioners from across the nation knew that when they called Steve with a technical problem, he would somehow find the answer or the person who had it. In other words, he cultivated networking before it became fashionable. Toward this end, he spearheaded the creation of the Personnel Testing Council of Metropolitan Washington (PTC/MW) that was an overnight success. He also made himself available to share his knowledge at countless professional conferences, conventions, and meetings throughout the country with seemingly tireless energy.

    This is just a reminder to look carefully at the Pre-Conference Workshops being presented at the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology’s (SIOP) 28th annual conference on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the Hilton Americas in Houston.

    Workshops are a great opportunity to learn and network with industry leaders and others who share your same interests. By attending workshops, you will:

    Something NEW for 2013! For the first time, we are offering an opportunity to register for one workshop (either morning or afternoon) at a reduced cost. For those of you who find it difficult to attend a full day of workshops, this option should give you more flexibility to attend, learn, and network!

    Registration costs are $400 (full day)/$300 (half day) for SIOP members and $650 (full day)/$485 (half day) for nonmembers. Fees include all registration materials for the workshop(s) attended, lunch, and reception.  For those of you who need continuing education (CE) credits, 3.5 hours of CE credits will be awarded for each workshop attended.

    The call for proposals for International Personnel Assessment Council (IPAC) 2013 can be found here on the IPAC website: http://www.ipacweb.org/ipac2013call.html. Proposals are accepted beginning December 3, 2012 and are due by January 31, 2013.
