Applying Social Media to Study I-O Constructs

People's daily lives are becoming increasingly quantified. People interact with technology much more frequently, and those technologies contain more precise ways of recording our online activity. Social media allows any person with an internet connection to record their current thoughts, feelings, and actions in the forms of text, images, audio, and video. This resource simultaneously provides other users access to that information instantaneously, including researchers. This talk will illustrate different ways that I-O practitioners can use social media, including tweets, company reviews, and images, to develop new insights into work-related constructs. In addition to discussing common approaches to collecting and analyzing social media data, this talk will also highlight the method's benefits and limitations relative to traditional data sources.

Dr. Ivan Hernandez is an Assistant Professor in Industrial-Organizational Psychology at Virginia Tech. His research interests involve applying computational approaches to improve both collecting and analyzing data related to organizational processes. Ivan's research applies methods such as Monte Carlo simulations, agent-based models, and machine learning to evaluate and develop new research methodologies related to stress, job satisfaction, and cultural development. His work has been published in journals such as Psychological Science, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Behavior Research Methods.
